Ahlan Kids

Aims to inspire young children to discover their best selves

Roles & Responsibilities

I lead both the design and development side of the project. Took it as a challenge and an opportunity at the same time to understand the strategies, processes involved with a startup. What I learnt from working with startups is you have to put on a magic hat as most of the time you have to extend beyond your scope of work. I worked with a small of team graphic designers, illustrators and content writers.

About the project

Ahlan Kids supports Muslim children in western society with engaging education. It’s resources inspire children to have fun exploring Islamic values with their family.

Challenge

One of the biggest challenge with this project being itself the nature of the product. The target audience of the products being sold are children aged 0-9 years but the end audience using the website are their parents. So to start with, deciding the look and feel of the website was one of the most challenging thing as you don’t want to take away the aura of the products from the website without making it look too fun.

Also, myself being the only Product Designer and Developer leading the way, with very limited resources had to manage accordingly.

The project was to be developed in wordpress using free resources or very little extra budget to put in, which made it even more challenging as it bought along some constraints to the design part as well because limited UI variations were possible.

Scope

The project started from scratch with an agile development methodology. There were lots of iterations and re-routes throughout the project. To overcome the challenges the project was planned in three phases.

– Starting with a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) where least required information was put on the website for people to know about the organization and register their interest in its products.
– Second phase being an ecommerce platform selling books and digital resources.
– Last and third phase, adding recurring payments where users will be able to subscribe to monthly products.

Design Process

I used design thinking approach for this specific project. The process was carried in a complete agile manner where re-visiting and iterations were part and parcel. In addition to it, strategizing and planning were like a daily capsule as we always tried to stay a step ahead. I consider design thinking as the backbone of a UX process and is really close to me as a UX professional.
